Throughout much of the 19th and early 20th century, Americans were highly anti-interventionists, but now it seems when ever talks of war brew they are the first ones to actively support it. What caused the shift?

I am an Englishman in 18th century UK and have incurred a lot of debts I don't have the ability to repay. I'm planning on escaping to the American colonies. Do my creditors have any recourse against me? Would the situation change after independence (ie, 19th century US)?
